Training Wheels

Week 2 – Compentency

Am I compentently incompentent … or incompently compentent?  ;)

In all seriousness this was a thought provoking class in many ways for me.

Firstly, my hat off to Desiree and Joanne for a well thought out and implemented warm-up! Very inspiring …

4 Levels of Mastery – thank you Karen for sharing these .. I can see how useful they will be to my own journey of learning as well as my awareness of others learning when I am training. One thought I had during this dicussion was what a wonderful moment it is as a trainer when you observe someone move from “Concious Competence” to “Unconcious Competence” and they don’t even realise it happened :)

I am doing my teleclass before we next have TTT class – yikes! so am looking forward to applying the learning about competencies to my lesson plan. I will be sure to post what I come up with.

Another interesting thought for me today was around class dynamics. The balance between encouraging the quiter members of groups to participate and also respecting someone’s desire to simply listen. I was in a very quiet mood yesterday. I have a lot on my mind this week and felt mentally “FULL” … I was really happy to listen, absorb and learn from that space. I was happy that Karen did not actively call me to participate although I had not been contributing verbally. This made me think about my own responses as a trainer in working effectively with the different energy that people arrive with in any given week.

Those are my thoughts for the day … thank you for listening

To Linda, the strong and clear!

Thanks for your comments. I really enjoyed hearing of your experience with Conscious Competence vs Unconsious Competence. It’s a bit of a mind twister for me but at the same time a big Aha.

I am so excited about your seminar. Will you tell us the details? I’d also like to hear how Train the Trainer contributes to this next teleseminar session.

    All the best,

    Dear Joanne – Professional Trainer

I had a nother very good lesson in 4 levels of mastery last night. I am undertaking an Ocean Swim in the new year and had a swim training session last night. I had to have some technique correction and suddenly found myself going from not knowing something had to change (Unconcious Incompetence) … to knowing I had to fix something (Concious Incompetence) and then attempting to make the correction and partly succeeded (Concious Competence) … I’ll let you know if I manage to get to Unconcious Competence!!

The teleclass I was refering to is the iCA one we need to do for Train the Trainer :) I will have tackled this before our next class together so I will be sure to let you now how it goes :)

    Hi Linda,

The blog situation is still a challenge for me. Um, let’s see that would make me consciously incompetent, eh? Too bad. I have read your bio, the 365 days you traveled the world, and your search for balance. Amazing!! Thank you for sharing. And forgive me if I went someplace not intended. Like I said, consciously incompetent.

I hope we have the opportunity to share our facilitating experiences if not in class then in blogs. Our stories will be interesting and a place to be supportive.

Oh, I would like to share my thoughts on participation. It sounds like you did the right thing in class when you energy was low. In my experience I keep it open for sharing but have not required it. I’ve encouraged it. As an adult I do not want to be called out. Even if I were called on when I did not have the energy I think I would be comforting saying that today I am low on energy and respectfully pass. I also do not give a blanket statement regarding nonparticipation. Does that make sense? “If you donot want to participate simply stay silent and place yourself on mute”. That would not be my style. Instead, “I encourage you to participate at the level you are comfortable. I want you to know this is a safe place so experiment here as you practice your skill!

    See you in class!

    Hi Desiree

you seem to be tacking the blog well :)
thanks very much for participation feedback … very helpful to have another persons perspective.

Glad my 365 day adventure inspired you! It was an amazing experience and taught me many wonderful lessons I now get to use as a coach.
